“The Ripple of Ralph”

This project was completed in collaboration with Artworks of Cincinnati and the Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile, Jr. Foundation. The mural was painted along side the talented Genevieve Laval.

The Client wanted a modern portrait of the late great Ralph Haile. Ralph was a banker in Cincinnati for over 20 years. Ralph always felt the the strong desire to give back to the community he loved. He was paramount in the creation of the Covington Urban Redevelopment Effort (CURE), which helped lay the groundwork for Old Town Plaza, Mainstrasse and the revitalization of the Lickiing Riverside neighborhood. Ralph, along with his wife Carol Ann, had a great love for the arts and bold and beautiful things. I wanted to make sure not only to incorporate Ralph’s love for the region he loved, but also represent both Ralph and his wife’s joy. A simplified map of the Cincinnati region encompasses the background. Modern radiating lines surround Ralph’s silhouette, helping to separate him from the background, and aid in the goal of making Ralph POP off the wall. A more detailed map was overlaid onto Ralph’s jacket, creating a map like pattern, as well as representing Ralph wearing his heart on his sleeve. I couldn’t have painted a portrait of Ralph Haile without including his signature Bow Tie. The entire composition is framed inside the shape of the wall to help the painting interact and blend with its surroundings. The title “Ripple of Ralph”, is meant to reference the “Ripple Effect”. What Ralph did for this community 40 years ago, created a positive ripple that can still be seen an felt today.
